An IP PIN is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers that helps prevent the misuse of their Social Security number on fraudulent federal income tax returns.

  • Taxpayers will receive an IP Pin every year if they have had IP Pin previously, received a CP01A notice, or have opted in for an IP pin.

  • Once issued an IP Pin in order to e-file the IP Pin must be entered on the tax return.

  • IP Pins can be issued to taxpayers, spouses, or dependents.

  • An IP pin issued in December is good for all returns filed in the following calendar year.

  • Taxpayers can request and retrieve IP Pin's through the IRS website.
