This article discusses the types of e-file categories for state packages and then provides a table of which type each state is a member of.
State E-File Package Categories
State Only- Can be filed without the federal return, but rely on federal acknowledgements (must be in CrossLink Software).
If you don’t send the federal and state at the same time, you must wait for federal to be acknowledged prior to sending the state.
Stand Alone- Can be e-filed without the federal return, does not rely on federal acknowledgements.
Piggyback- Must be filed with the federal return.
If not filed with the federal return, these must be paper filed.
