An IP PIN is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers that helps prevent the misuse of their Social Security number on fraudulent federal income tax returns.
Taxpayers will receive an IP Pin every year if they have had IP Pin previously, received a CP01A notice, or have opted in for an IP pin.
Once issued an IP Pin in order to e-file the IP Pin must be entered on the tax return.
IP Pins can be issued to taxpayers, spouses, or dependents.
An IP pin issued in December is good for all returns filed in the following calendar year.
Taxpayers can request and retrieve IP Pin's through the IRS website.
