This article demonstrates how to successfully upload a binary attachment to a tax return.

What is a Binary Attachment?

  • When completing a tax return you might have a need to attach paperwork to the return in the software using a binary attachment.

  • These binary attachments allow additional information to be transmitted to the IRS with the taxpayer's forms.

The most common binary attachments are:

  • ACA Explanation for Business Rule F8962-070

  • SCH E Safe Harbor

  • Multiple stock transactions included on Form 8949

  • 8332 Release/Revocation of Release of claim to Exemption for Child by Custodial Parent

Adding a Binary Attachment

  1. Ensure the file you wish to attach is saved on your machine in a location that the software can access (C:, X:, etc.). Be sure to save the file under a name that makes it easy to identify.

  2. Navigate to the bottom of the form where you will be uploading the binary attachment.

  3. Select the Attachment Link.
