Rule Number: IND-182-01


Rule Text: The Spouse Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) must match the e-File database. Please double-check your entry and resubmit your return with the correct number.

To correct the error, reference the DataValue (this indicates what person or number the rejection is related to). For more information, regarding how to view the details and data values related to rejections and refusals reference Viewing Reject and Refusals.


Possible Cause 1: The incorrect IP Pin was entered for the spouse.

Resolution: Enter the spouse's correct IP Pin on the tax return, resign, and resubmit.

If the spouse cannot obtain the correct IP Pin then their return must be paper filed.


Possible Cause 2: The spouse's information is entered incorrectly and the IRS system thinks it is a different person (double-check the SSN, name, and birthday).

Resolution: Correct the spouse information, resign, and resubmit.


Taxpayers can obtain their IP Pin by locating their CP01A Notice issued for the calendar year they are filing or obtain their IP in their online IRS account. For more information regarding the IP Pin reference Identity Protection Pin (IP Pin).
