Printing a Paper Return

This article demonstrates how to print a return that will be paper filed where the customer paid their prep fees up front. This article DOES NOT pertain to Paper RTā€™s.

Ā 

  1. If your return has a Bank Application, navigate to Form 8879 and change your refund type to a ā€œ1ā€ (check from IRS), ā€œ2ā€ (Direct Deposit from IRS), or a ā€œ4ā€ (Balance Due).

  2. Repeat this process at the state level on your state e-file form or state long form.


  3. Process the payment for the tax return. See How to Process a Payment in the Tax Software.


  4. Remove the e-file form(s).

    1. For the federal return this is Form 8879.

    2. State e-file forms will be the last form located under your state on the Attached Forms Tree (usually an 8453 or 8879).



  5. Form 8948 will add to the federal return, check the applicable box on lines 1-6 and enter any explanation needed.



  6. Reverify the return and complete all additional verifies.


  7. Open the Print Menu (small print button located above the Tax Return Toolbar).



  8. Select Return Components.



  9. Select Federal Return and State Return (as needed).



  10. Print the documents as you normally would.

    1. You might need to save them to your machine if that is what you do in a normal return and print from an X or C Drive.


  11. Sign the federal tax return.

    1. The customer and the paid preparer listed on the return must hand sign the return, the IRS will not process the return with digital signatures.



  12. Sign the state return(s).

    1. The customer and the paid preparer listed on the return must hand sign the return.

  13. Make copies for the customer and your file.


  14. Prepare mailing envelopes. You can find a list of mailing addresses here: Mailing Addresses

    1. In the copy to be mailed for federal you should have all the items from the federal return print option, copies of all forms with withholding, and any additional documentation required for the return.

    2. In the copy to be mailed to the state you should have all the items from the state return print option, copies of all forms with withholding, a copy of the federal return, and any additional documentation required for the return.


  15. Finally, select the print button from the Tax Return Toolbar, have the customer sign like normal.

    1. This is not to mail it is for the document checklist, Refund Assurance, Marketing, Etc.

    2. Place the normal items in the folder and give the customer the Client Copy.
