Form 1099-R Distributions from Pensions, Annuities, Retirement

This article demonstrates how to complete Form 1099-R.


About Form 1099-R

  • Taxpayers should receive Form 1099-R for any distributions of $10 or more, from any type of retirement plan.

  • Taxpayers who have not received their 1099-R form by February 15th, and have made efforts to obtain their 1099-R with no results, are able to complete Form 4852 substitute 1099-R.


Completing Form 1099-R

  1. Select Add Form.

  2. Locate and highlight Form 1099-R in the All Forms & Schedules Menu. Double-click to add.


  3. If a joint return, choose New Taxpayer's or New Spouse's Occurrence.


  4. Complete the 1099-R, filling in all applicable sections. Pay close attention to the state information.

    1. Box 7 of 1099-R determines if the withdraw is taxable, a non-taxable rollover, or subject to the 10% early withdrawal penalty. You can view a full list of codes and what they mean by selecting Choices from box 7.
