Rule Text: A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where "PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd" or "SpouseClaimAsDependInd" is not checked.

Possible Cause 1: The dependent filed their tax return in the same calendar year, and did not indicate they would be a dependent on another return.

Resolution: Have the dependent amend their return with Form 1040-X, collect the prep fees upfront, and paper file the parents return.


Possible Cause 2: Someone else has used the dependents social security number and information to file a return, either fraudulently or in error.

Resolution: Collect the prep fees upfront, paper file the parents return, and submit Form 14039 for the dependent.
