Rule Number: IND-517-01

Rule Text: A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where "PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd" or "SpouseClaimAsDependInd" is not checked.

In order to correct the error, reference the DataValue (this indicates what person or number the rejection is related to).

Possible Causes:

  • The dependent filed their tax return in the same calendar year, and did not designate themselves as a dependent on another individual's tax return.

  • Someone else has used the dependents social security number and information to file a return, either fraudulently or in error.

Possible Resolutions:

  •  If the dependent should be claimed on the individual's tax return, the dependent's tax return will need to be amended (Form 1040X).

  • After the dependents amendment has been processed the taxpayer may file their return electronically. However, due to the amount of time it takes to process an amendment it is usually best to have the customer paper file their return claiming the dependent.
